Darren Hreniuk is the driving force and creative mind behind the canopy tour concept, which was developed in Costa Rica. While the concept of transporting cargo using zip lines tied to trees is not a new idea, Hreniuk was the first one to transform this ingenious transportation method into a wild treetop adventure for the whole world to enjoy. This innovative way of touring allows adventure-seekers to experience the rainforest from different perspectives (ground level, midsection and top), thus witnessing and comparing the different species of wildlife at each level.

On the Canopy Tour experience, also branded as the Sky Trek and the tirolesa, you will glide high above the forest from tree to tree on a special system of cables. You’ll experience an adrenaline rush when you jump off one of the platforms into the forest to glide on to the next station. This eco-adventure will give you an intense and close-up look at nature while you explore the elevated ecosystem of the rainforest canopy, which is home to most of the forest’s flora and fauna.

There are more than 50 canopy tours throughout Costa Rica located in various settings, including rainforest, cloud forest, and tropical dry forest. The different locations vary in the number of platforms and zip lines they offer, and in heights and distance between platforms.

Of course, safety is always a priority. The Costa Rican government regulates the design and operation of these popular tours, and has established stringent safety requirements for the operators. Companies must provide all the necessary safety equipment and trained bilingual guides to accompany all visitors on their trips.
