Many visitors consider driving in Costa Rica to be part of the adventure in visiting this tropical paradise. It certainly is a great way to experience local culture first hand. The country has a somewhat undeserved reputation for having challenging roads, but that is not the case in every region. Tourists visiting the Central Pacific or Arenal will drive through mountains on two lane roads that are in good shape year round. On the other hand, visitors to Monteverde can expect dirt and gravel roads for a significant part of the drive.

Having the right car makes a tremendous difference in your driving experience in Costa Rica. For some tourists, price is the most important factor in choosing a rental. In our view, the primary factors in choosing a rental car are the condition of the vehicle and the ground support provided by the rental company. Additionally, Dollar works on major holidays such as Christmas and New Years, when other suppliers are closed or working with limited staff.
